Again, Ckay has proven that he is special. And this peculiarity comes from his plush vocals that often paint pictures of very realistic love, and romantic interest on records. For his current album “Sad Romance,” he visibly pegs various tale together involving few successful love stories, tragedic relationships, accelerating his multiple sex escapades, being lust and flirty as well, and more.
Sad Romance, is like a path that reflects CKay’s life and has slowly crept into his artistry. Perhaps, these are part of the strings that comes with being the artiste who recently gained global attention, for an unexpected record. He seem to have invested so much on that path as an artiste. Now he delves in fully to explore it all. By infusing the right select musical instruments that fine tunes his mild vocal range as each message was passed across equally. CKay becomes quite an intentional act on the 12-track LP. Right from cherry picking the perfect set of guest artistes that featured on the album. Ayra Starr, Ronisia, Davido, Focalistic, and Mayra Andrade.
Each act per se, assisted in amplifying the theme and expanded every tale CKay told. Carefully without missing out, also the record producers on this album understood CKay’s musicality and expressed through sounds every feeling and emotion his gone through. This project is drawn from each phase of the reality of a “Sad Roamance.”
As Ayra Starr’s effort on the fifth track led by breezy trumpeting riffs and percussion titled “Come Close.” Tentatively, allowed CKay explored sex and being flirty with the girl he just met. “Come let me rock your body/From Naija to France yeah, yeah.” He chorused with depth. And telling the story from Ayra’s lens, she expressed her passion and affection for the love that her man renders. But of course, CKay only wishes to smash and leave, he has no intent building any strong relationship with the woman even as he requested that she abandon her boyfriend, to accelerate the risque feeling and lifestyle with him still.
On the follow up track, “Watawi” featuring Davido and Focalistic, gave answers to CKay’s potential woman’s rallying about questions where their relationship is headed. Obviously, CKay has no time to keep genuine relationships as he is ever ready to jump from one woman to another. Perhaps he has the money to foot philandering bills. He is now a global super star. So kindly add this reason to your list as part of what crowns this project as such a “Sad Romance,” just as the artiste had stated earlier.
Also, on the Mayra Andrade assisted “Samson & Delilah,” that narrates a tragedic love interest like Samson and Delilah’s story in the Holy Bible. CKay sings to his lover lustfully and claims that he can’t resist her. On this track he becomes very seductive even as he launched further to the next solo and groovy song titled “By Now,” produced by Blaise Beats. He settles down to talk with his woman that they should have done so much by now as sex was mainly involved. He promised that no one would know either. And for a fact, on this project, “By Now” stands out just like the ethereal opening for “Lose You” that he had Ronisia’s input where he pleads to his woman that she stays with him.
For the first track “You,” it was quite an admirable, coolly led opening song on the album. While the bonus track “Love Nwantiti,” that first catapulted CKay’s career to global stardom, wasn’t needful on the project. As “Emiliana,” still makes good rounds with or without being a promotional single. “Mmadu” as well as the culturally led “Watawi.” In conclusion, generally “Sad Romance” lacked replay value although with a couple stand out songs. Yet it was made with lucid directions. To a great extent, this is clearly an album bent on being like a reflection of CKay’s life. The one that has gradually crept into his artistry without his consent and he tagged it “Sad Romance.”
