The first December edition of Introducting Port Harcourt brightest young things is tagged hot edition. Featuring three spectacular creatives doing great jobs from the garden city popularly known as Port Harcourt. Mo’ Sandie
Sandra Mike Onyewuchi, passionate female Radio broadcast producer popularly known as Mo Sandie, is peculiar. She would be celebrating her birthday in a few days and it is amazing and not co-incidental for you to be reading her brief story on this episode of Port Harcourt brightest young things.
In a male dominant industry such as this, Mo Sandie who is currently working as the production executive of Beat FM, Naija FM and Classic FM Port Harcourt. She also dabbles in A&R, event planning and management from time to time. A graduate from the Imo state University, where she studied Mass communication in 2008. Mo’s effort within the media and creative stratosphere is verse. According to her “I started my journey of broadcasting right in front of my Father’s mirror. Mimicking a voice from the radio and fate got me an admission into Imo State University to study Mass Comm. in 2008” She said. “In 2013, post graduation, I got myself into an internship program at Magic FM Aba. NYSC (Nigerian Youth Service Corps) came, Enugu State broadcasting service accepted my posting where I explored every department except engineering and accounts. I retained in that establishment which made me realize that my life has been tailored for this” Mo concluded and you can feel the warmth from her passion beaming.
Passion has kept Mo running including curiosity which flares her unquenchable thirst for creativity. To Mo Sandie, it is like there are levels to unlock every single moment. As for her, she completely has to tap in to unlock those levels which in return render her so much satisfication and pleasure.
The journey for young, beautiful and vibrant Mo Sandie, has been good, bad, ugly and many things at the same time. In her words, “Sometimes it can get monotonous that you will feel like you have been going in circles, like clockwork. And other times, you will have so many kumbaya moments that will make you bounce like yo, you doing good” She said in a brief excitement.
Also, making lots of money, getting love and having wonderful moments with family has been pushing Sandie forward. Spending over a decade within the media and broadcast spaces. She confesses that she draws inspiration from herself and also proudly proclaims that she is living her dream. “I will like to think that I am killing it” She also confessed in between our chat.
Concerning the level which Port Harcourt plays within broadcast media. According to Mo, “Port Harcourt is doing alright but also it has a long way to go when it comes to broadcast media. Most people in Port Harcourt still have this primitive concept for broadcasting and it is stifling the growth of media generally” She said.
For Mo, she is confident being in a male dominated industry such as the one she is in currently. “I am changing the stereotype. I am already defiling odds as a female producer, you will attest that you don’t see alot of me around and I am really good” She said and brags abit about her job which she has every entitlement to. Adding that she also helps broadcasters develop themselves and broaden their creative abilities.
She has a long list of brands and personalities which she has works with. Funny enough as she said some of those who had worked with her broadcast production don’t even know, neither had she any extra relationship with them. Working with likes of Akas Baba, Prince Hezekiah, Romeo With Juliet, Idahams/Grafton Records, Lord Jenny, Market Square, Kilimanjaro, Bolé Festival, L’Afrique Fest, Ediz Wine Bar, Nooks Apartment and more including those undisclosed clients.
As for Mo, she yearns and would love to work with everybody, mostly brands in need of high quality audio production or somebody crazy enough to push their brand to the next level. She is open and of course you can always call the beautiful Mo’ Sandie. She is ready to come all the way through. In the next five years, Sandie aspires to become the CEO of a highly sought after multinational Media Agency and the heartbeat of all things creative.
Fameboy BL
22-year old Fameboy BL, started his music journey right from secondary school days. He toured classical music at the time prior to when Afro-music simmered within his consciousness. It formed him a unique set of sound built around the new generation of Nigerian music creators and listeners.
According to Fameboy, he formed a group called Acapella with a bunch of friends that he sang songs with. Performing those tracks relentlessly regardless the hurdles he faced. In his words, “We all had to face life after everything and since then I had been performing solo” He said. “Since we started doing our things individually, that was when Afro music hugged me” Fameboy revealed.
Formerly, he went by the stage name Jay_nice which later became Fameboy BL. According to him, “A stranger whom I do not know at a certain point called me famous boy while I was working on the road” He said. “Explaining to me how he knew me through my records at the time and from their I picked that name and to date I have been striving” Fameboy concluded.
“The BL on my name signifies believe, which has been my number one motivation to date” He added. For Fameboy BL, music is like the wine that fills the cup of silence within him. “I have come to realize that music is the only thing that keeps me happy even when I have nothing” He said. “I play music and sing along and I am satisfied” Fameboy BL explained gladly.
Currently, with several tracks in his catalog including the fresh debut EP under his belt, he is bridging the gap with his sounds for both Local and International listeners. Believing that the Port Harcourt market has not been fully tapped, Fameboy, motions towards introducing the world Port Harcourt culture and lifestyle through his artistry. While alot comes into play to inspire his music like children, the street, life and several elements. He mentions the likes of Fireboy DML, Joeboy, Omah Lay, Burna Boy and Ajebo Hustlers as those Influencing his art as he also looks forward to making music with them amongst others in due time.
On his debut 6-track EP, he entertained featured tracks from Vibe Killer & Lisa. Concluding that the next five years would walk him through becoming one of the next rated artiste within the Nigerian soundscape. He said fully trusting and believing the process without any shadow of doubt attached. Fameboy BL is a young star on the rise.
Alexandra Pedro
21-year old female Port Harcourt based Nigerian super star dancer, Alexandra Pedro, is making her own mark on the creative arts industry within her city and beyond.
Exploring the art of dance, self expression through the culture of dance for Alex, had began from childhood. According to Alexandra Pedro during a brief chat with Port Harcourt Gist, “I really want to be something everyone would like and appreciate me for and so whenever music comes on, I always had something beautiful I did and it is what I am happy about” Alex said smiling. “I was really happy everyone loved me when I do those things and along the line I discovered that it was dance and I could remember I was around age three when I started anticipating every night for my Mom’s stereo to turn on. How my body moves usually excites everyone and most importantly it makes me very happy” She said. Revealing that it was how dance started for her.
Alex has been able to navigate dance so deeply, discovering how the beautiful art can also be further developed by other upcoming dancers within Port Harcourt and the southern part of Nigeria. Hoping to study Mass communication, journalism major at the University any moment. She tells me genuinely how she launches to showcase through her dance words, writinga and so forth through the interpretation of the art of dance. In 2019, Alex started her career professionally and has been able to work with Nigerian dance icon Kaffy, RedBull and more. Also, she is currently in touch with various Nigerian dance communities which she reckons with to date.
In her words, “Working with Kaffy really came as surprise at first. I was tensed, felt out if my skin” She said in elation. And added how she ended up successful dance rehearsals with the dance icon that lasted for 2hrs. While on set she remembered that they spent 5hrs and she confessed it was great. “After that wonderful moment with Kaffy, then I realized I had more” Alexandra Pedro gushed out those words gladly.
For Alexandra Pedro, the Port Harcourt, Kalabri native, dance is like a place that allows her be herself without being judged. Of course the journey has not always been smooth. In 2020, she earned an award for Female dancer of the year. The following year she was nominated for Dancer of the year by BAC. Currently, she is a Dancer at the famed Port Harcourt entertainment company Oshikiri Entertainment. Former dance instructor at The PSK Studios.
Alex is also a member of a dance movement pioneering a course tagged “What is Dance” and also a member of the Port Harcourt dance journalist, who is looking forward to inspire and expose upcoming dancers into both the practical and theory aspect of dance. For her, an average Port Harcourt dancer exploring dance culture is super creative, energetic and exposed. However, she confessed the need of an evolution within the dance spaces. Alex, has a vivid yet wild dream to achieve within the dance landscape and she is taking each step gradually as it comes.
